    Oscillatory dynamics of a superconductor vortex lattice in high amplitude ac magnetic fields

    In this work we study by ac susceptibility measurements the evolution of the solid vortex lattice mobility under oscillating forces. Previous work had already shown that in YBCO single crystals, below the melting transition, a temporarily symmetric magnetic ac field (e.g. sinusoidal, square, triangular) can heal the vortex lattice (VL) and increase its mobility, but a temporarily asymmetric one (e.g. sawtooth) of the same amplitude can tear the lattice into a more pinned disordered state. In this work we present evidence that the mobility of the VL is reduced for large vortex displacements, in agreement with predictions of recent simulations. We show that with large symmetric oscillating fields both an initially ordered or an initially disordered VL configuration evolve towards a less mobile lattice, supporting the scenario of plastic flow.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.     Neural controller for the trajectory tracking control of an inertia wheel pendulum

    En este trabajo de investigación, se estudia el problema de control de seguimiento de trayectorias en un péndulo de rueda inercial. Los resultados son presentados de una forma constructiva. Primero, se obtiene un controlador basado en el modelo utilizando la técnica de linealización por retroalimentación de salida. Posteriormente, el controlador es rediseñado al incorporar una red neuronal con el propósito de evitar el conocimiento de los parámetros exactos del péndulo de rueda inercial, y se obtiene un diseño robusto. Se usa un perceptrón de dos capas, cuyos pesos de salida son actualizados en tiempo real utilizando una ley de adaptación derivada del análisis de convergencia de las soluciones del sistema de lazo cerrado. El lema de Barbalat se utiliza para concluir que las trayectorias del error de seguimiento del péndulo convergen a cero. Se presentan simulaciones numéricas y experimentos en tiempo real, que confirman los resultados teóricos.In this paper, the problem of trajectory tracking control in an inertia wheel pendulum is studied. Results are presented in a constructive form. First, a model-based controller is obtained by using the output feedback linearization technique. Then, the controller is redesigned by incorporating a neural network with the aim of avoiding the exact parameters knowledge of the inertia wheel pendulum, obtaining a robust control scheme. A two-layer perceptron is used, whose output weights are updated in real-time using an adaption law derived from the analysis of convergence of the closed-loop system solutions. Barbalats lemma is used to conclude that the pendulum tracking error trajectory converges to zero. Numerical simulations and real-time experiments are presented, which confirm the theoretical results.Peer Reviewe

    Psychometric Analysis of the Teaching Styles Survey in Physical Education (TSPE)

    El objetivo principal fue analizar las propiedades psicométricas del cuestionario que valora los estilos de enseñanza con los que se identifican preferentemente los docentes de educación física. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 120 docentes de Educación Secundaria. Para el diseño del instrumento se partió del cuestionario DEMEVI al que 12 jueces expertos dieron la validación de contenido. Tras los respectivos análisis factoriales, exploratorios y confirmatorios, se obtuvo un modelo de cinco factores y de 20 ítems presentando índices de ajuste satisfactorios. Se obtuvieron niveles aceptables de consistencia interna y estabilidad temporal. El profesorado menor de 30 años valoraba más los estilos cognitivos, participativos y socializadores, mientras que en función del sexo, los hombres menores de 30 años se identificaban más con estilos de carácter tradicional frente a las mujeres de la misma edad que preferían los cognitivos. El cuestionario de estilos de enseñanza en educación física proporciona evidencias fiables y válidas para su usoThe objective of the study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the questionnaire which values teaching styles with which preferentially identify physical education teachers. The sample was composed of 120 secondary school teachers. In designing of the instrument they started from a DEMEVI questionnaire to which 12 experts judges got the validation of content. After the respective factor, exploratory and confirmatory analysis, five-factor model and 20 items were obtained, which showed satisfactory indexes of adjustment. Acceptable levels of internal consistency and temporal stability were obtained. Teachers under 30 years valued more the cognitive, participatory and socializing styles while men under 30 years of age identified more with traditional character styles compared to women of the same age who preferred the cognitive ones.     Close encounters involving RAVE stars beyond the 47 Tucanae tidal radius

    The most accurate 6D phase-space information from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) was used to integrate the orbits of 105 stars around the galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae, to look for close encounters between them in the past, with a minimum distance approach less than the cluster tidal radius. The stars are currently over the distance range 3.0 kpc << d << 5.5 kpc. Using the uncertainties in the current position and velocity vector for both, star and cluster, 105 pairs of star-cluster orbits were generated in a Monte Carlo numerical scheme, integrated over 2 Gyr and considering an axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric Milky-Way-like Galactic potential, respectively. In this scheme, we identified 20 potential cluster members that had close encounters with the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, all of which have a relative velocity distribution (Vrel_{rel}) less than 200 km s1^{-1} at the minimum distance approach. Among these potential members, 9 had close encounters with the cluster with velocities less than the escape velocity of 47 Tucanae, therefore a scenario of tidal stripping seems likely. These stars have been classified with a 93\% confidence level, leading to the identification of extratidal cluster stars. For the other 11 stars, Vrel_{rel} exceeds the escape velocity of the cluster, therefore they were likely ejected or are unassociated interlopers.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 table, Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Searching for tidal tails around ω\omega Centauri using RR Lyrae Stars

    We present a survey for RR Lyrae stars in an area of 50 deg2^2 around the globular cluster ω\omega Centauri, aimed to detect debris material from the alleged progenitor galaxy of the cluster. We detected 48 RR Lyrae stars of which only 11 have been previously reported. Ten among the eleven previously known stars were found inside the tidal radius of the cluster. The rest were located outside the tidal radius up to distances of 6\sim 6 degrees from the center of the cluster. Several of those stars are located at distances similar to that of ω\omega Centauri. We investigated the probability that those stars may have been stripped off the cluster by studying their properties (mean periods), calculating the expected halo/thick disk population of RR Lyrae stars in this part of the sky, analyzing the radial velocity of a sub-sample of the RR Lyrae stars, and finally, studying the probable orbits of this sub-sample around the Galaxy. None of these investigations support the scenario that there is significant tidal debris around ω\omega Centauri, confirming previous studies in the region.     Adaptive Neural Network Motion Control of Manipulators with Experimental Evaluations

    A nonlinear proportional-derivative controller plus adaptive neuronal network compensation is proposed. With the aim of estimating the desired torque, a two-layer neural network is used. Then, adaptation laws for the neural network weights are derived. Asymptotic convergence of the position and velocity tracking errors is proven, while the neural network weights are shown to be uniformly bounded. The proposed scheme has been experimentally validated in real time. These experimental evaluations were carried in two different mechanical systems: a horizontal two degrees-of-freedom robot and a vertical one degree-of-freedom arm which is affected by the gravitational force. In each one of the two experimental set-ups, the proposed scheme was implemented without and with adaptive neural network compensation.     Quantifying the speech-gesture relation with massive multimodal datasets: informativity in time expressions

    The development of large-scale corpora has led to a quantum leap in our understanding of speech in recent years. By contrast, the analysis of massive datasets has so far had a lim- ited impact on the study of gesture and other visual communicative behaviors. We utilized the UCLA-Red Hen Lab multi-billion-word repository of video recordings, all of them showing communicative behavior that was not elicited in a lab, to quantify speech-gesture co-occur- rence frequency for a subset of linguistic expressions in American English. First, we objec- tively establish a systematic relationship in the high degree of co-occurrence between gesture and speech in our subset of expressions, which consists of temporal phrases. Sec- ond, we show that there is a systematic alignment between the informativity of co-speech gestures and that of the verbal expressions with which they co-occur. By exposing deep, systematic relations between the modalities of gesture and speech, our results pave the way for the data-driven integration of multimodal behavior into our understanding of human communication

    We study problems that arise in the context of covering certain geometric objects (so-called seeds, e.g., points or disks) by a set of other geometric objects (a so-called cover, e.g., a set of disks or homothetic triangles). We insist that the interiors of the seeds and the cover elements are pair wise disjoint, but they can touch. We call the contact graph of a cover a cover contact graph (CCG). We are interested in two types of tasks: (a) deciding whether a given seed set has a connected CCG, and (b) deciding whether a given graph has a realization as a CCG on a given seed set. Concerning task (a) we give efficient algorithms for the case that seeds are points and covers are disks or triangles. We show that the problem becomes NP-hard if seeds and covers are disks. Concerning task (b) we show that it is even NP-hard for point seeds and disk covers (given a fixed correspondence between vertices and seeds)

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. Aims. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. Methods. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range similar to 8 km to similar to 190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 mu bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18 +/- 0.03 mu bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 mu bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion.
